2022 Emmy Awards: ‘The White Lotus’ dominates the field [watch]

American comedy drama series The White Lotus won big at the 2022 Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday 12 September. The series, starring Jennifer Coolidge and Euphoria actress Sydney Sweeney, won 10 awards from its 20 Emmy nominations.

‘THE WHITE LOTUS’

Season one of The White Lotus is the most-awarded television series at this year’s Emmy Awards. The series won the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Directing, Writing, Original Dramatic Score and Main Title Theme Music Awards. 

Jennifer Coolidge, who plays Tanya, won the Supporting Actress in a Limited Series Emmy Award while Murray Bartlett, who plays hotel manager, won the Supporting Actor Award.

The six-part series is set at a Hawaiian resort over one week and dives into the lives of the travellers and the hotel employees.

‘EUPHORIA’ SEASON 2

Euphoria, starring Zendaya as Rue Bennett, won 6 Emmys from 16 nominations. Zendaya became the youngest-ever two-time acting winner following her Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for the series. Colman Domingo won the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series Award at the Creative Arts Emmys on 4 September. 

The series also won awards in the Picture Editing, Choreography, Cinematography and Contemporary Makeup categories.

‘SUCCESSION’ SEASON THREE 

Succession walked away with the Outstanding Drama Series, Writing and Casting Awards at the Emmys. Matthew Macfayden won the Supporting Actor in a Drama Series Award, beating out his co-stars Kieran Culkin and Nicholas Braun. 

The dark comedy series follows four rich siblings who will do anything to win their father’s approval and control of his company.

‘BARRY’ SEASON THREE

Season three of Barry picked up three wins at the Emmys including the Outstanding Stunt Coordination, Picture Editing and Sound Editing Awards. 

The third season of Barry picks up six months after the season two finale. Sally Reed (played by Sarah Goldberg) is filming her own show while Barry Berkman (played by Bill Hader) has no acting classes to attend.

‘A BLACK LADY SKETCH SHOW’ SEASON THREE

Having received five Emmy nominations, A Black Lady Sketch Show picked up two wins. The hilarious show won awards for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series and Picture Editing. The series has already been renewed for a fourth season and scored a 100% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘GEORGE CARLIN’S AMERICAN DREAM’

George Carlin’s American Dream directed by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio is a two-part HBO documentary. The doccie follows George Carlin’s comedy career which spanned over five decades. Stephen Colbert described the doccie as “the Beatles of comedy”. 

The documentary features interviews with Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Patton Oswalt, Bette Midler and Jon Stewart.

‘THE GILDED AGE’ SEASON ONE 

The Gilded Age won an Emmy Award for its exceptional production design. The series is a period drama from the mind of Oscar winner Julian Fellowes. The series is set in 1882, when Marian Brook (played by Louisa Jacobson) moves from rural Pennsylvania to New York City after her father dies. 

She moves in with her old-money aunts Agnes van Rhijn (played by Christine Baranski) and Ada Brook (played by Cynthis Nixon). Soon after moving in with them, Marian is caught in a social war between one of her aunts and a new-money money.

‘WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS’ SEASON THREE 

What We Do In The Shadows is based on a 2014 cult movie from Emmy nominee, Jermaine Clement and Oscar winner, Taika Waititi. The series follows four vampires who have lived together for hundreds of years. 

The series won the Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-fi Costumes award at the Emmys.
