A Toyota Quantum driver is charged with overloading as he stuffed 35 school children into the 16-seater minibus taxi in the North West.

The 22-year-old driver of the Toyota Quantum loaded 35 school children into the vehicle. The vehicle however has the capacity of 16 passengers but children aged between 14 and 16 years were stuffed in the minibus taxi.

He was discovered on Friday morning by the Provincial Traffic Authorities in Moruleng, North West, said the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management.

The driver is also charged for operating the vehicle without complying with the terms and conditions of the operating licence.

“The driver is transporting learners without a scholar operating licence nor is he contracted by the department. Therefore, he is charged for non-compliance to the National Land Transport Act.”

Stone said such transgressions will be dealt with harshly.

“The overloading and usage of public transport vehicles contrary to the legislation will always be dealt with harshly and any driver found to the contrary will be dealt with without any mercy,” said Stone.

PUPILS INJURED IN TAXI COLLISION IN KZN

Meanwhile, between 15 and 20 school children suffered injuries during a serious taxi collision on Friday morning.

The collision happened on the M19 near Reservoir Hills just after 07h00, said ALS Paramedics Medical Services.

The paramedic services arrived at the scene to find a single taxi carrying school children had lost control. It overturned multiple times before coming to a standstill on the centre island.

More emergency services and Advanced Life Support Paramedics were dispatched to the scene to assist.

“Around 15 to 20 school children sustained various injuries ranging from moderate to serious. They were stabilised on the scene before being transported to various Durban hospitals for the further treatment that they required.

The exact events that led up to the accident are still unknown. The South African Police Service were however on the scene for further investigations.
