A Durban power station explosion in Klaarwater has left many residents feeling as if “aliens” have arrived. The explosion on Tuesday night left many parts of eThekwini in total darkness.

In addition to major blackouts, colourful lightning bolts and hot gusty winds were experienced around the city.

It’s unclear what caused the substation to explode

POWER STATION LEAVES DURBAN IN DARKNESS

According to a notification shared on the eThekwini Municipality Twitter account, an explosion at the Klaarwater major substation caused a widespread power outage to more than half of Durban’s homes.

According to the municipality, areas in the northern, western and southern regions of the city are still without power.

Staff are “investigating” the cause of the explosion, claimed the official account.
