At the Galle International Stadium on Wednesday, opening batsman Usman Khawaja and seasoned Steve Smith produced undefeated hundreds to put Australia in control of the first Test against Sri Lanka. The touring team was 330/2 in 81.1 overs with Khawaja and Smith in the middle after the opening day.
After winning the toss, Australia’s stand-in skipper chose to bat, which paid off for the World Test Champions. A fast half-century off 35 deliveries by left-handed opener Travis Head provided the visitors a flamboyant star.
Head scored 57 off 40 deliveries in his debut innings as an opener in the series before succumbing to Prabath Jayasuriya in the 15th over with 93 runs on the board. Marnus Labuschagne then joined Khawaja for a brief 43-run partnership before Vandersay caught him at slip for a shaky 20 off 50 deliveries.
Khawaja and Smith then batted well together to score an unbroken 195 runs for the third wicket to increase Australia’s command. The stumps were called with Usman Khawaja undefeated on 147 off 210 deliveries with 10 fours and a six and Smith on 104 not out from 188 balls with as many boundaries.
Smith became the fifth-fastest Test cricketer to reach 10000-runs during his epic knock. After playing his famous flick towards mid-on, Steve Smith ran for a single. Sri Lanka’s opener saw Jayasuriya and Vandersay take wickets, while the remainder went wicketless.
