ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 preparations may be hampered by Steve Smith’s elbow injury, international media reported on Sunday.
Smith reportedly injured his right elbow when throwing a ball during Sydney Sixers’ washed-out BBL 14 match against Sydney Thunder on Friday. Smith suffers elbow issues and had surgery in 2019.
Since captain Pat Cummins is on paternity leave, the right-handed batter will lead Australia in the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka later this month.
Smith is consulting a doctor about his condition, which has delayed his departure for the team’s training camp in Dubai. The 35-year-old will leave for Dubai later this week, according to Cricket Australia (CA).
Smith’s injury adds to the 2009 winners’ worries about Cummins’ rehabilitation.
The right-arm pacer will seek counsel after recovering from “increased left ankle soreness” after bowling the most overs in the five-match Test series against India. Cummins was selected captain of Australia’s preliminary Champions Trophy 2025 squad, however his participation is uncertain.
“He will seek specialist rehabilitation advice this week and is likely to require a period of physical preparation and recovery,” stated CA. “The [national selection panel] will continue to monitor Cummins’ recovery leading into the Champions Trophy.”
