The City of Tshwane has paid up close to R2 billion for the month of July after they were in arrears in their Eskom electricity account.

TSHWANE MANAGES TO CATCH UP WITH DEBT

The city has previously been threatened by the power utility to cut off their electricity supply due to an outstanding account.

But Tshwane said last week that the amount that Eskom was speaking of was just for the month of July, which the city has now paid up, Mayor Randall Williams said.

“I am pleased to confirm that as of 13h00 [on Friday], 16 September 2022, the City of Tshwane has fully paid Eskom’s August account of R1.6 billion.”

This August account refers to the electricity consumption in July.

The payment comes after a plan was presented to Eskom by the capital city. The City of Tshwane arranged to make daily payments to the power utility.

On Friday, R185 million was paid to settle the account.

HOW MUCH DID THE CITY PAY IN THE PAST WEEK?

The city provided a breakdown of the daily payments made from Monday.

Tshwane made the following payments throughout the week:

  • Monday, 12 September – R125 million
  • Tuesday, 13 September – R75 million
  • Wednesday, 14 September – R110 million
  • Thursday, 15 September – R125 million
  • Friday, 16 September – R185 million

While the August bill is up to date, Williams said they acknowledge that the September bill for August consumption is now due.

The mayor says the city has continuously engaged with Eskom on their payment plan.

“The City of Tshwane remains committed to finding a long-term solution to our financial challenges so we can ensure that we pay creditors like Eskom in full and on time. We, therefore, appeal to residents, businesses and other clients to pay their municipal accounts on time so that we can be able to pay creditors like Eskom.”
