Despite hamstring issues, Lionel Messi will play in Tuesday’s Copa America semi-final against Canada in New Jersey, according to coach Lionel Scaloni. Messi returned to play in Argentina’s quarterfinal win against Ecuador on Thursday after missing the last group-stage match due to injury. He seemed hampered but played the whole game.
Inter Miami’s 37-year-old missed a penalty in the shootout that settled the game at NRG Stadium. “Leo (Messi) is fine, he finished well, so tomorrow he will be part of the match, we are calm,” Scaloni told a press conference on Monday before the MetLife Stadium semi-final. “Good level. We need him.”
Argentina will play Canada again in the tournament after beating the CONCACAF team 2-0 in Group A. Scaloni and Canada’s Jesse Marsch will try “something different” this time. “All coaches take notes to correct mistakes and hurt our opponents,” remarked the 46-year-old manager. “Coaches must do different things. We will strive to control the ball and stop their game.”
The Argentine manager said his team will counter Canada’s robust and aggressive approach after a penalty shootout triumph over Venezuela. “Canada has players who are physically strong and also technically good, with a coach who has conveyed an aggressive way of playing,” stated. “All teams have struggled with them. Physically, they’re tough to equal, but we aim to win with our assets.”
