Eastern Cape is SA’s worst for drunk driving: A THOUSAND motorists arrested
More than a THOUSAND motorists have been arrested for drunk driving in the Eastern Cape since the start of December.
More than a THOUSAND motorists have been arrested for drunk driving in the Eastern Cape since the start of December, as law enforcement intensifies road safety operations during the festive season.
Provincial Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said 275 arrests were recorded between 24 and 28 December alone, with the OR Tambo District registering the highest number of arrests.
The Amathole and Alfred Nzo districts followed closely behind.
High-profile arrests
Binqose said the past weekend also saw several high-profile arrests, including two public prosecutors, underscoring the department’s message that the law applies to everyone.
“It’s over a thousand drivers that have been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in the Eastern Cape, and that sends a strong and clear message that no one is above the law,” Binqose said.
“If you are drunk and get behind the wheel, you will be arrested.”
He added that authorities expect further arrests as the province approaches the New Year period, with traffic officers remaining on high alert.
Out in full force
“As much as we hate to say it, we fear there may be more arrests to come as we head towards New Year. Our officers will be out in full force,” Binqose said.
Motorists have been urged to drink responsibly, plan alternative transport, and prioritise road safety to prevent crashes and loss of life.
