The dazzling Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy for the five-match Test series between hosts England and India from June 20 to August 4 was presented here on Thursday. Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar and England pacer James Anderson unveiled the trophy. The trophy has Anderson and Tendulkar’s signatures and images.
The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, a joint venture between the ECB and BCCI, will now symbolise all prospective Test series between the two teams. In England, the two teams played the Pataudi Trophy, named for former India captains Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi and his son, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi.
The series in India was named Anthony de Mello Trophy to honour a BCCI founder. He was the board’s first secretary and president from 1946-47 until 1950-51. The Pataudi medal, awarded to the series champion captain, will recognise the Pataudi family.
Anderson, England’s all-time leading wicket-taker in Tests, called the trophy’s makeover a ‘proud moment’ for him and his family at the unveiling.
“It’s a proud moment for me and my family to have this iconic series named after Sachin and myself,” Anderson said. The rivalry between our nations has always been exceptional, filled of history, emotion, and remarkable events.
“This recognition is a privilege. Looking forward to the next chapter in England this summer. It should be fascinating, competitive cricket from two great teams. Elite sport at its best.”
However, Tendulkar called Test cricket the highest form of the game, to which he owed his foundation. He also thanked India and England for defining the format and hoped the globe will continue to cherish it.
According to Tendulkar, Test cricket is like life: you give your all and if things go wrong, you have another day to regroup, ponder, unlearn, and bounce back.
