Eskom announces nearly 10-hour power outage in Gauteng areas
Eskom has announced a planned electricity interruption in parts of Gauteng on Wednesday as technicians carry out emergency maintenance.
Residents and businesses in several Midrand suburbs will experience a lengthy power outage on Wednesday, 6 May, as Eskom conducts emergency maintenance on its distribution network.
The power utility confirmed that the planned outage will affect Barbeque Downs, Kyalami Glen and Waterfall from 8:30 until 18:00. Eskom said the temporary shutdown is required to allow maintenance teams to work safely on essential infrastructure linked to the area’s power supply.
According to Eskom, the interruption is aimed at improving the reliability and stability of electricity services in the affected communities. The utility stated that the maintenance work forms part of ongoing efforts to prevent unplanned outages and equipment failures on the network.
Areas to experience a prolonged power outage
Eskom said, “The interruption in electricity supply is necessary to perform essential maintenance on our distribution power lines.”
The utility further warned customers to remain cautious throughout the outage period, noting that electrical systems should still be treated as active despite the planned shutdown.
“In the interest of safety, customers are advised to treat all electrical appliances as live at all times during the power supply outage,” Eskom said.
Maintenance aimed at improving network reliability
The emergency maintenance comes as Eskom continues with infrastructure upgrades and repairs in several parts of Gauteng to reduce pressure on ageing electricity systems. Planned maintenance work has become increasingly common as the utility attempts to strengthen network performance and minimise unexpected supply interruptions.
Although the outage has been scheduled for Wednesday, the utility cautioned that unforeseen developments could affect the maintenance programme.
The power utility stated that “should circumstances beyond the control of Eskom arise, the planned electricity maintenance may not proceed as communicated.”
Eskom apologises for inconvenience
Eskom apologised to customers for the disruption and thanked residents for their patience and cooperation during the planned maintenance work.
The utility reiterated that the maintenance is necessary to improve long-term service delivery and ensure safer electricity distribution in Midrand communities.
