This is horrible! A 68-year-old farmer of Rustenburg was BRUTALLY attacked, severely assaulted, and hacked to death with pangas.

THE FARMER WAS SEVERELY ASSAULTED AND HACKED TO DEATH

According to police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh, the farmer Frans Venter was home with two workers, a gardener and a domestic worker, when the attack happened.

The attack happened on a farm in Modderfontein, close to Rustenburg on Wednesday.

Four armed men firstly overpowered the gardener who was working in the garden.

“The gardener shouted for help but was tied up with an electrical cable. The domestic worker, who reacted upon hearing the gardener screaming, was also overpowered and also tied up. Lastly, the suspects proceeded and gained entry into the house and overpowered Mr. Venter.”

THE TWO WORKERS WERE OVERPOWERED AND TIED UP

Myburgh said the elderly Frans was severely assaulted and stabbed to death.

She said the attacker stole numerous items before they fled the scene on foot.

“One of the workers managed to escape and ran to a neighbour for help. Neighbouring farmers and the police were immediately alerted of the incident. A private person arranged for air support with a chopper, and numerous farmers, as well as security personnel, joined in a search for the suspects.”

TWO OF THE ATTACKERS WERE ARRESTED

She said two of the four attackers were spotted and arrested.

“The first suspect was spotted and arrested by a security company official and handed over to the police. A short while later, police also spotted another suspect and arrested him.

“The suspects were found in possession of cellular phones, a clap pistol with blank rounds, a BB Gun, and a bag containing items robbed at the farm.”

THE REMAINING TWO ATTACKERS ARE STILL AT LARGE

Myburgh said the two attackers, believed to be in their late 20’s, would appear in the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 23 September 2022. They face charges of murder and house robbery.

The two other attackers are still at large.

Family members described Frans as a legend, a man who is loved by many.

Meanwhile, DA North West Spokesperson on Agriculture and Rural Development Gavin Edwards said the DA would like to applaud the swift response by private security as well as the South African Police for effecting arrests.

THE FARMER FRANS IS A MAN WHO IS LOVED BY MANY

“However, this incident is a clear example of the failure of the SAPS in this province to implement a rural safety plan.

“Our condolences go to the family of the farmer. The DA will monitor this case closely and implores that justice is served.”
