Just three months before the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh, Australia is watching two crucial players’ ailments. Sophie Molineux, the left-arm spinner, broke her ribs last week after being hit in the chest by a ball while batting. Molineux is set to miss up to eight weeks, leaving him little time to recover before Australia’s first T20 World Cup encounter against Sri Lanka in Sylhet on October 4.

Molineux was named Player of the Series in Australia’s T20I series in Bangladesh and will lead a strong spin bowling contingent at the T20 World Cup with Georgia Wareham, Ash Gardner, and Alana King. Grace Harris, a hard-hitting all-rounder, has been sidelined by a calf injury and has pulled out of England’s local T20 competition, The Hundred. Molineux helped Australia win the 2018 and 2020 T20 World Cups, while Harris helped them win the latest in South Africa last year.

Cricket Australia issued a brief statement on the injuries. “Molineux suffered an acute rib fracture after being struck by a ball in the chest while batting last week,” the report said. Harris’ leg strain worsened during training for The Hundred and the season. Her progressive recovery and return to play programme is underway.” Australia is in T20 World Cup Group A with India, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Related Topics
