GR CUP action returns to Killarney this weekend

Ashley Oldfield leads the standings as the popular GR Cup heads to the Killarney International Circuit for the penultimate Global Touring Cars (GTC) race.

GR CUP action returns to Killarney this weekend

The popular GR Cup, part of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing SA (TGRSA) returns this weekend, with the action moving to the Killarney International Circuit near Cape Town on Friday and Saturday. Experienced racer Ashley Oldfield holds a 9-point lead in the standings, but second-placed Thomas Falkiner has momentum in his favour, after a double win at the previous round.

The one-make series, which features the stunning Toyota GR Yaris in stock trim, follows the Global Touring Cars (GTC) calendar, and has seen five race weekends to date in 2022. Next up is Round 6 of the exciting formula, and with Oldfield holding onto a slender lead, the Capetonian is sure to be aiming for a good result on his home circuit.

At the same time, Falkiner has his tail up after his good points haul in East London, and may fancy his chances at the tricky Killarney circuit. He has a healthy buffer of 18 points over third-placed Sean Nurse, who in turns has Mark Jones a single point behind him. As such, Nurse will be trying to close the gap to Falkiner, while simultaneously fending off Jones.

Jeanette Kok-Kritzinger is currently in fifth place, despite missing out on the previous round due to illness. She has Lerato Matebese just three points behind her, and will be keeping a close eye on her fellow motoring scribe during the final races of the year.

To shake things up a little at Killarney, Toyota SA Motors’ Riaan Esterhuysen will again be joining the fray. During the previous round, at East London, the Product PR man stood in for Kok-Kritzinger, but this time round he’ll be fielding a seventh GR Yaris for the weekend. Given his strong showing in East London, Esterhuysen’s presence may just have an influence over the outcome of not only this weekend, but possibly the championship.

As with the GTC race weekend, the GR Cup action starts with practice sessions on Friday, and will be followed by a qualifying session and two races on Saturday.
