Here’s the BAD news for millions of SASSA grant recipients this Easter

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed that the majority of social grant beneficiaries will only receive their April payments after the upcoming Easter long weekend.

That spells bad news for those who were banking on their SASSA grant to spoil family and loved ones with Easter eggs.

While older persons will be paid prior to the four-day weekend, millions of other recipients – including those on disability and children’s grants – will have to wait several extra days due to the holiday calendar.

Payments delayed by Easter weekend

SASSA’s April payment schedule is as follows:

  • Older persons: Thursday, 2 April
  • Disability grants: Tuesday, 7 April
  • Children’s grants: Wednesday, 8 April

The delay is due to the Easter period, with Good Friday falling on 3 April and Family Day on 6 April.

Because SASSA avoids scheduling payments immediately after public holidays, as well as on Mondays and weekends, most grants are pushed to the following week.

Majority affected

This means that while pensioners are paid before the holiday break, the bulk of beneficiaries will only access their funds five to six days later, after the long weekend has passed.

The staggered system – designed to manage demand and ensure smooth payments – typically sees grants paid over three days early in the month, but public holidays can shift this timeline.

Grant increases still apply

Despite the delayed timing for many recipients, increased grant amounts will take effect from April 2026 following approval by the National Treasury.

Key increases include:

  • Old Age, Disability & Care Dependency Grants: R2,320 → R2,400
  • War Veterans Grant: R2,340 → R2,420
  • Foster Care Grant: R1,250 → R1,290
  • Child Support Grant: R560 → R580
  • Grant-in-Aid: R560 → R580
  • SRD Grant: remains at R370

Support and guidance

SASSA has urged beneficiaries to plan accordingly and avoid unnecessary trips to payment points before their designated dates.

The agency reiterated its commitment to timely payments and encouraged anyone experiencing delays to seek assistance at their nearest office.
