Drawing from his experience as a High-Performance Coach for both Pakistan and South Africa, former cricket player Yasir Arafat has offered insights into the various cricketing cultures of both countries.
Arafat underlined in a recent interview a notable contrast in attitude between the two teams, especially with regard to learning and development.
He said that their different degrees of success on the international scene could be mostly related to this disparity.
“I have coached Pakistan and South Africa under high performance. The primary difference I have observed is that, unlike the situation among Pakistani players, even the top-quality and seasoned players of South Africa desire to learn.
The former Pakistan pacer also pointed out that players, regardless of experience, stay receptive to criticism and always work to improve their abilities in South Africa.
On the other hand, he said that the ethos of the Pakistan team makes it difficult to create an always learning environment.
It is relevant to note that Pakistan’s poor performance in most recent white-ball tournaments calls for criticism.
First embarrassing the Men in Green were New Zealand, losing the tri-nation ODI series final and suffering two losses to the Kiwis in the series.
Then Pakistan hosted a significant ICC event for the first time since 1996, involving six countries competing in the Champions Trophy 2025.
After back-to–back losses against New Zealand and India, the Men in Green became the first team eliminated from the tournament; their last group match against Bangladesh was rained out owing of rain.
Leading the series 3-1, the hosts have crushed Pakistan in the continuous five-match T20I series against New Zealand; the final game is scheduled for Wellington on March 26.
