‘I have always been a Pirates fan’ – Cavin Johnson reveals

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson has revealed that he grew up supporting Orlando Pirates.

The 65-year-old was recently in the books of Amakhosi before the club parted ways with him in June. Speaking to Junior Khanye Khohlwa, the Johannesburg born-coach declared his love for the Buccaneers as a youngster.

Johnson said what made him love Pirates the most was how diverse the team was back in the day given the political situation in the country.

“As a youngster…This is going to kill the people. Locally, I have always been a Pirates fan. It’s the people’s team. In my teenage years, I always went to Orlando. And Pirates, we could identify with Jomo and a lot of the guys who were there,” he said.

“They always had a diversified team…we always had an excuse to go to Orlando. If you were going to Orlando and the police stop and ask, what are you doing here? we’ll lie and say ‘no no, I’m going to watch my uncle’. Pirates always had a mixture of players.”

Last season, Cavin Johnson coached Pirates rivals Kaizer Chiefs. His record as Amakhosi was not impressive having failed to get the club in the top eight.

Which team should Johnson coach next?
