Since then, there has been speculation about who will replace him and how the process will unfold. The regime has only navigated a succession once before. Unlike the managed transition after Ayatollah Khomeini’s death, this one comes amid full-scale war, an economic crisis, water shortages, and in the aftermath of anti-government protests and a brutal crackdown.
