The EFF has described Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula’s Independent Panel appointments as both irrational and biased.

‘Irrational and bias’: EFF slams Panel to investigate Phala Phala

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have slammed the ‘biased appointments’ for the independent panel to investigate the robbery at Phala Phala farm.

EFF says Mapisa-Nqakula’s appointments are ‘irrational and bias’

In a statement, the Red Berets rejected the appointments made by National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula. The party stated that her appointments are ‘irrational, bias and are a complete disregard of the consultative process with political parties represented in Parliament’.

The EFF believes that Mapisa-Nqakula essentially spat in the face of South Africans and the country’s democracy. The people who were appointed were not nominated by any of the nine opposition political parties represented in Parliament.

“Her appointments have no regard for the nominations by a majority of the opposition parties represented in Parliament and at face value, are to the detriment of accountability,”

said the EFF.

Red Berets singles out Richard Calland as the ‘most appalling’ appointment

The party is convinced that the Panel will be biased and favour President Cyril Ramaphosa in its investigation. The EFF noted the appointment of Richard Calland calling it the ‘most appalling’ of all.

The EFF described Calland as an ‘unrepentant advocate and admirer’ of the President. The party cited moments on broadcasts, print and social media where Calland reportedly lauded Ramaphosa for factional activity within the African National Congress (ANC).

“He does not have a strand of Independence in him, and is a self-styled political analyst who will denigrate the process with his blind hatred for Ramaphosa’s political enemies,”

the EFF said about Calland.

The party plans to consult with other political parties to reverse the appointments

The Red Berets further stated that Mapisa-Nqakula brought shame to both Parliament and the Constitution of South Africa through the appointments she made. The party believes they were pre-determined and will ‘absolve Ramaphosa of his breach of his oath of office’.

The EFF plans to consult with other political parties that are represented in Parliament to reverse the appointment of the Independent Panel. The party concluded by stating they will be left with no option but to table a motion of no confidence against Mapisa-Nqakula.
