Kaizer Chiefs see another key target slip through the cracks

Kaizer Chiefs saw Elias Mokwana choose Esperance over a move to Naturena. Now, another target has also turned them down.

Appollis to leave South Africa for Algeria

National broadcaster SABC Sport reported that Oswin Appollis is set to move to Algeria in the coming days. This after persistent rumours of a move to Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates.

“SABC Sport can confirm winger Oswin Appollis is close to sealing a move to Algeria, with Polokwane City having accepted the latest bid. SABC Sport has it on good authority that Polokwane City have accepted the offer and Appollis is now set to move pending a medical as well as personal terms being agreed. It means Chiefs have missed out on yet another target and must now regroup, while Rise and Shine have agreed to sell their best player from last season for what is expected to be a record transfer fee.”

Mr Reliable’ opts for a fresh, foreign challenge

Cape Town-born Oswin Appollis is predominantly a left-winger who cuts inside onto his preferred right foot. The 22-year-old was a shining light for Polokwane last term, bagging six goals and three assists from 29 league appearances. Not only is he productive in front of goal, but he’s also reliable, missing just a solitary match over the campaign. That’s a seriously underrated trait for any player to possess at the top level. Reports last month indicated that the Bafana star stopped training with Polokwane City in order to make his move to Kaizer Chiefs a reality. Amakhosi stole a march on Orlando Pirates who were also linked with the player but now both Soweto giants have missed out with the jewel in Polokwane’s crown set to move to North Africa.

Will Chiefs regret missing out on Appollis? Who are their other options in the wide positions?

Kaizer Chiefs finished the 2023-2024 league campaign in tenth position, their worst placing in the history of the DStv Premiership. Their last league title came back in 2015, their most recent piece of major silverware. They begin the new 2024-2025 Betway Premiership campaign away to Marumo Gallants on 14 September.
