Kei Mouth detective accused of raping teen in police station denied bail

The 45-year-old former South African Police Service (SAPS) detective who allegedly raped a 17-year-old girl in his office at the Kei Mouth station was denied bail on Wednesday, 31 August.

Eastern Cape Community Safety spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the matter was heard in the Komga Magistrate’s Court. It was the accused’s second court appearance following his arrest by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) on Friday, 19 August.

The accused was remanded in custody at the East London Maximum Correctional Centre.

“The 45-year-old suspect was meant to investigate an assault case the 17-year-old girl had opened against her boyfriend.

“Instead of helping her, the detective is alleged to have further victimised the young girl. The teenager managed to fight back, broke free and reported the incident,” said Binqose.

As previously reported, the Kei Mouth detective – who has since resigned from the police – collected the victim from her home on 6 August and took her to the station for an interview. Along the way, he made sexual advances toward her, which she rejected.

Upon entering the office, the accused allegedly raped the girl. She fought back and managed to stab him in the shoulder with a bottle she had broken over his head. She escaped and reported the incident to members of the nearby Kei Mouth Community Service Centre.

Provincial Community Safety MEC, Xolile Nqatha, welcomed the Komga Court’s decision and called for a successful prosecution and delivery of justice for the victim.

Nqatha attended an inter-governmental imbizo focused on crime in Mthatha on Thursday, said his spokesperson.
