Matric learner drowns during a school outing

An 18-year-old matric learner drowned at Willow Grove Resort’s tidal pool in Gqeberha on Sunday, 23 October.

MATRIC LEARNER DISAPPEARED IN TIDAL POOL

Jonathan Tufts, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) deputy commander of the Gqeberha station, said rescue swimmers, the police, and provincial and private EMS responded to reports of a drowning in progress at the resort.

“On arrival on the scene rescue swimmers entered the water to search for a missing 18-year-old male matric learner reported to be missing in the tidal pool,” said Tufts.

The NSRi said two other learners who were on a school outing had managed to get out of the water safely and were not injured.

Locals helped to search for the missing matric learner and the NSRI and Coastal Water Rescue swimmers conducted sweeping line free dive search manoeuvres.

The 18-year-old’s body was found and paramedics attempted to revive him with Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Unfortunately, the teenager was declared dead at the scene after CPR efforts were exhausted.

The police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services took the matric learner’s body. An inquest docket has been opened for investigation.

“Condolences are conveyed to the family of the deceased teenager,” said Tufts.
