New Australia manager expects challenging transition for aging team

New Cricket Australia (CA) chief Todd Greenberg said difficult conversations are needed to resurrect an aging team amid concerns of a senior player exodus. Australia’s lone under-30 player was debutant opener Nathan McSweeney in the first test against India in Perth, where Pat Cummins’ team lost 295 runs.

Greenberg, who will succeed Nick Hockley as Chief Executive at the conclusion of the home summer, recognized Australia’s difficulty while stressing that better management is extending players’ careers.

“We do have a more ageing side, particularly in red-ball cricket, and that won’t be easy,” Greenberg told Australian media in Adelaide on Thursday.

To be fair, players and staff must have hard, honest conversations, which I think are happening.

“In saying that, though, the professionalism of modern athletes are tending to take them longer in their careers; the way we take care of them, the way we rehab them, the way they take care of themselves.”A nice balance, I think.”

Australia rested all test players from the recent T20 series against Pakistan and a few from the ODI series to prepare for the five-test series against India. White-ball matches were poorly attended, prompting reporters and former players to accuse cricket management of shortchanging fans.

Even if selection decisions were divisive, Greenberg suggested CA might improve public communications.

“We want to explain the reasons why we might do certain things,” stated.

Again, that might divide views. People may disagree, but I think it starts with strong communication.”
