NPA decides against prosecuting Godongwana after complainant refused to proceed with case

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) announced that the Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, will not be prosecuted over a sexual assault case opened against him.

NPA DECLINES PROSECUTION AGAINST MINISTER OF FINANCE

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in Mpumalanga, Advocate Nkebe Kanyane, declined prosecution in the sexual assault matter against Godongwana after an assessment of all the available evidence and after consultations with the complaint.

The complainant “expressly did not wish to proceed with the case despite being offered all the necessary support available to complainants in cases of this nature,” said NPA spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa.

The case against the Minister of Finance was opened by the complainant at Skukuza Police Station on 11 August 2022. The alleged incident occurred in a hotel room in the area.

The complainant alleged that Godongwana fondled her. In August, the Minister said he would not step down over the claims and he furthered that the accusations were an attempt at extortion.

The NPA stressed that it remains steadfast in vigorously prosecuting sexual offence and gender-based violence cases.
