Oldest operating petrol station in Cape Town to get a makeover

Cape Town’s oldest operating petrol stations is set to undergo a major upgrade in Mouille Point.

The Shell Vic Proctor garage, located on the corner of Beach Road opposite Three Anchor Bay, first opened in 1953 and remains in operation today.

Renovation work on the forecourt is scheduled to run from 16 March until 19 July.

According to Ward 54 councillor Nicola Jowell, the project will modernise key infrastructure while keeping the site operational.

“A little piece of Cape Town history is about to get a refresh,” Jowell said in a social media post.

The planned upgrades include new underground fuel tanks, a redesigned forecourt canopy and updated signage.

Historic Mouille Point petrol station to get facelift

The Shell Vic Proctor garage has long been a familiar landmark along the Atlantic Seaboard.

Despite the renovation work, the site will remain partially open to customers. The convenience store and other retail outlets will continue operating throughout the construction period.

This means visitors will still be able to stop by the site while upgrades take place.

Officials say the improvements will modernise the facility while preserving the city’s longest-running petrol station.

Beach Road traffic may be affected

Motorists travelling along Beach Road in Mouille Point may experience some disruption during the construction period.

Traffic along the Atlantic Seaboard is already highly congested. Drivers are advised to allow extra travel time while work is underway near the petrol station.

Jowell thanked residents and motorists in advance for their patience while the historic site gets a makeover.
