Pakistan beat Nepal to win Women’s Asia Cup opener

On Sunday, Pakistan defeated Nepal by 9 wickets in the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup opener at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium. The Girls in Green chased down the score in 11.5 overs thanks to Gul Feroza and Muneeba Ali’s 105-run opening stand.  Feroza smashed 35-ball 57 with 10 fours for his maiden T20I half-century, while Muneeba survived with 34-ball 46 and eight fours. Pakistan won the toss and bowled first. The bowlers pressured Nepal from the start as Fatima Sana removed Samjhana Khadka (4) in the first over.

Sita Rana Magar and Kabita Kunwar stayed on the crease until Nepal lost a wicket in the fifth over. Sadia Iqbal sent Kunwar (13) and skipper Indu Barma (0) back to the pavilion. Nepal’s run-getting slowed after Rubina Chhetry left in the 10th over. Meanwhile, Sita dropped in the 15th over after reaching 30-ball 26. In 20 overs, Kabita Joshi and Puja Mahato reached 108 for six wickets. Kabita remained unbeaten on 23-ball 31 with three fours and a six. Mahato earned 25.

Sadia Iqbal scored 2/19. India beat the UAE 78-run in another Group A encounter to extend their winning streak. After batting first, India scored 201/5 in 20 overs. First, opener Smriti Mandhana was removed. Kavisha Egodage caught her for 13 off 9 balls, leaving India 23/1. Harmanpreet Kaur, India’s captain, scored 66 from 47 balls before being run out. She was in control, hitting seven fours and a six in her innings.

In the last over, wicket-keeper Richa Ghosh hit 12 boundaries and five consecutive fours to stay unbeaten on 64 off 29 balls. Match Player of the Match was her. The Girls in Blue won by 78 runs after restricting UAE to 123/7 in 20 overs. Deepti Sharma (2/23) led the bowlers.
