On Monday, Faisalabad experienced an emotional and historic time when the glittering trophy of the Pakistan South Africa ODI series 2025 was unveiled at the Iqbal Cricket Stadium. Emotionally and historically, international cricket returned to Pakistan after more than 17 years.
The pretty ceremony was attended by the newly appointed ODI captain of Pakistan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and the South African captain, Matthew Breetzke, who unveiled the exquisite silverware before the highly awaited 3-match series.
This ODI series is all the more important because the last ODI that was played in Faisalabad was on April 11, 2008, when Pakistan won Bangladesh by seven wickets. The next games are planned on November 2, 6 and 8 all at the same place.
Thrilling cricket moments have been provided to the fans by the tour so far. The Test series was drawn 1-1, with Pakistan defeating South Africa 2-1 in the T20I series, courtesy of a match winning performance of Babar Azam, who scored 68 off 47 balls in Lahore on Saturday.
The strategy adopted by Pakistan to have the first go in such a T20I final was successful because Shaheen Afridi and Salman Mirza were able to destroy the top order of the South African team to limit them to 139 in nine wickets. Pakistan pursued the target and had six balls to waste.
Historically, Pakistan and South Africa played 87 ODIs, where South Africa was at the receiving end 52 times and Pakistan 34 times and a draw was recorded in one game. Pakistan has the lead in Faisalabad having won twice (1994, 2007) against the single victory by South Africa in 2003.
The ODI series teams are composed of both young and experienced players. Shaheen Shah Afridi, Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Saim Ayub and Faisal Akram are some of the stars that make up the Pakistan team. The touring party of South Africa headed by Breetzke comprises of Quinton de Kock, Lungi Ngidi and the young star Dewald Brevis.
Both parties are trying to leave Faisalabad on a high note and the stage is set to be an electrifying return of ODI cricket to the country.
