On Thursday, Pakistan’s spin trap lead by Sajid Khan and Noman Ali dismissed England’s top half of their batting lineup in one session, dropping them to 110-5 on the opening day of the crucial third Test at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
England started well with Ben Duckett (52) but skipper Ben Stokes, batting on six, regretted going first on a shifting surface. At the break, Jamie Smith was batting on five as England struggled to recover.
Pakistan attacked with spin from both ends with Sajid and Noman, who shared all 20 England wickets in the Multan test, bowling together with the series tied 1-1. Left-arm spinner Noman drew the first blood when Zak Crawley (29) tried to drive but edged it to Saim Ayub at gully.
After fluffing a sweep stroke, England vice-captain Ollie Pope (three) fell to Sajid for the third time in three innings. The off-spinner then trapped top-ranked test batsman Joe Root lbw for five with a crisp twisting ball.
Duckett smashed a six off Sajid for his fifty and was saved by Noman spilling a rebound. The spinner bowled Duckett lbw in the same over with a low delivery. Sajid’s thigh-slap celebration continued when he bowled Harry Brook (five), who appeared uncomfortable with the moving ball.
England is 118-6 with Jamie Smith at 7* and Gus Atkinson at zero, while Pakistani spinners Sajid and Noman have four and two wickets, respectively.
