Pilanesberg Airport set for major redevelopment after 2023 fire

The long-awaited redevelopment of Pilanesberg Airport is set to gain momentum following the signing of a landmark agreement to fast-track the project.

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson, alongside North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi and Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality Mayor Dinah Pitso, will formalise two Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) at the airport outside Rustenburg.

At the centre of the agreements is the rebuilding and modernisation of Pilanesberg Airport, which suffered extensive damage during a devastating fire in 2023.

Technical support to fast-track redevelopment of Pilanesberg Airport

Under the first agreement, Infrastructure South Africa (ISA) will work alongside the North West Provincial Government’s Department of Community Safety and Transport Management to provide project preparation and packaging support for the airport’s redevelopment.

Project preparation is often one of the biggest hurdles in large infrastructure projects.

Through ISA’s involvement, government aims to ensure the airport rebuild is properly scoped, structured and ready for implementation, reducing delays and improving investor confidence.

The airport plays a strategic role in supporting tourism to the Pilanesberg region and facilitating regional economic activity. Its restoration is seen as critical to unlocking further growth in the province.

The rebuilt Pilanesberg Airport is also expected to restore confidence in the province’s transport infrastructure following the 2023 setback.
