A Mamelodi East constable is holding his grandmother, nephew and a boy hostage as SAPS negotiators work to end the standoff.
A tense hostage crisis is unfolding in Mamelodi East, Tshwane, after a police constable allegedly turned on his family, sparking a standoff with negotiators and tactical units.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili, the situation began around 8 am on Tuesday when the 32-year-old constable allegedly locked his family inside their home in the Buffer Zone area.
Before officers arrived, he allegedly fired two shots, raising fears for the safety of those inside.
Hostages Inside
The constable is holding three relatives hostage: his grandmother, his nephew, and a young boy.
Police negotiators have confirmed that all three remain inside the house with him.
Specialised SAPS units, including Hostage Negotiators and the Special Task Force, have surrounded the home.
Muridili said negotiators are engaging with the constable while investigators work to establish his motive.
Commissioner’s Update
Tshwane District Commissioner Major General Samuel Thine said police remain in contact with the constable, who has so far cooperated with negotiators.
He has requested to see his girlfriend and his brother.
Police continue to manage the active crime scene as the standoff develops. Authorities have urged patience while negotiations remain underway.
