Rashid Latif Questions Babar Azam T20I Selection

The selection of Babar Azam T20I has been questioned when the former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif was concerned about the form and style of the batter. Latif has pointed out that the approach by Babar in the current ICC Men T20 world cup 2026 is dragging the team behind.

Babar is only 31 years old and has only accomplished 91 runs in four innings with an average of 22.75. Latif asked why the batter who in the past was not in the T20 side because of his conservative nature, was reintroduced into the squad. Babar is no longer of this kind of a player. Where did it improve? Why did you bring him back?” Latif commented in one of the discussions on a personal channel.

The previous wicket-keeper also stressed that the present day T20 cricket requires batting aggressiveness. He indicated that holding 20-25 balls without attacking is not only restricting the scoring opportunity but also straining other batters to hasten the innings.

These remarks of Latif are representative of a broader argument between analysts and fans about the batting approach of Pakistan in stressful T20 games. Although technically Babar Azam is a gifted player and has been a pillar in the ODIs and T20Is, the short format is becoming more demanding in terms of flexibility and rate of strike in order to be comparable with the modern times.

The level of critique will not have much impact on the reputation of Babar, yet it indicates that his role in T20Is has to be evaluated. The management and coaching personnel of Pakistan might need to explore the possibilities of using classical technique instead of aggression that benefits the team ambitions in the international T20 tournaments.
