After his opening partner fell cheaply again on Thursday, India captain Rohit Sharma suggested Virat Kohli’s run-drought may end in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa.

Kohli was dismissed for nine in a semi-final win over defending champions England in Guyana, continuing his low scoring streak. He pulled Reece Topley for six, but two balls later the left-arm paceman bowled Kohli for knocking over the leg stump. Former captain Kohli, 35, has scored 75 runs in seven innings at 10.71 this tournament.

Rohit was confident that Kohli, one of his generation’s best batsmen, would soon return to form. Saying “Virat is a quality player,” “Any player can endure that. We get his class. Having played 15 years, form is never an issue. He may save it for the finale.”

Rohit, however, has scored 248 runs, including three fifties, at over 41 average at the tournament. After a blistering 92 against Australia last time, his 57 helped India reach 171-7 on Thursday.

India won by 68 runs after England collapsed to 103 all out, with spinners Kuldeep Yadav (3-19) and Axar Patel (3-23) doing the most damage. Saturday’s Kensington Oval final in Barbados will pit India against South Africa, the tournament’s unbeaten teams.

“We’ve been very calm,” said Rohit, who captained India in last year’s 50-over World Cup final loss to Australia at home.

“We understand the final’s context. Staying calm helps you make good decisions. We have been calm and steady, which has helped us.

“Our best effort. I can only hope to perform well in the final.”
