South African cinemas Ster-Kinekor and Nu Metro have officially dropped plans to screen Melania, a documentary about US First Lady Melania Trump, who is married to President Donald Trump.

The decision has come just days before its global scheduled release on Friday, 30 January.

Trump has been criticical in his views of South Africa, accusing it of promoting a “white genocide”, and discriminating against white, Afrikaner farmers.

STER-KINEKOR, NU METRO CANCELS MELANIA DOCCIE SCREENING

Days before its scheduled release, Nu Metro and Ster-Kinekor cinemas announced they would no longer be screening the documentary, Melania.

Film distributor company Filmfinity’s Thobashan Govindarajulu told media: “Based on recent developments, we’ve taken the decision to not go ahead with a theatrical release in territory.” 

When asked what the “recent developments” were, he added: “That was our decision.” 

Melania takes a behind-the-scenes look at the First Lady’s preparation to return to the White House, following her husband’s second inauguration last year.

It also covers her role as his “advisor”, particularly in the fashion department.

The film was funded by Amazon MGM Studios, which is owned by billionaire businessman Jeff Bezos. Melania Trump was reportedly paid $28 million (R440 billion) for the project, which included the title of “executive producer”.

SPECIAL WHITE HOUSE SCREENING

While Melania will get zero screentime in South Africa, it is expected to be released across 2000 cinemas in the US and 5000 worldwide.

The White House, the home of President Donald Trump and the First Lady, has planned a special screening of the film this weekend.
