Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed said on Monday that his retirement from international cricket would be a “personal decision” after his previous statement sparked conjecture.
The experienced wicketkeeper batter, who is tutoring Faheem Ashraf-led Dolphins in the Champions T20 Cup, said “there is nothing left to say” about his future. The 37-year-old said he will play regardless of national team selection. He added that his retirement would be personal.
The other day I remarked ‘nothing is left to say’. I’m still playing cricket and will take any chance,” Sarfaraz remarked.
“I never said ‘I want to bat on this position or that position’ in Pakistan [team]. I would make the national squad if I could.
“Leaving cricket is my choice. I will stop cricket when I feel it.”
Sarfaraz, who made his Pakistan debut in 2007, played 54 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 61 T20Is, scoring 6164 runs with six centuries and 32 fifties.
In 2017, the wicketkeeper batsman led Pakistan to their first ICC Men’s Champions Trophy trophy after a 180-run win against archrivals India in the spectacular final. He won 11 straight T20I series, a Pakistani captain record.
His last green jersey appearance was a three-match away Test series against Australia last year. The right-handed hitter scored seven runs in the first Test of the series and was dropped. Sarfaraz Ahmed last played white-ball for Pakistan in November 2021.
