Iconic actress Shaleen Surtie-Richards, who passed away in June 2021, was awarded the Best Supporting Actress in a Telenovela Award at the 16th annual South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) on Saturday 3 September. She won the posthumous award for her role in Arendsvlei as Muriel Foster. Penguin Films, the production company behind Arendsvlei, penned a heartwarming message to the late actress.

SHALEEN SURTIE-RICHARDS RECEIVES POSTHUMOUS SAFTA 

Just hours before her passing on 7 June 2021, iconic actress Shaleen Surtie-Richards shot her final scenes for kykNet’s telenovela, Arendsvlei. At the time, it was announced that the actress died peacefully in her sleep. She was 66 years old at the time of her death. 

The talented actress was honoured with the Best Supporting Actress in a Telenovela award at the SAFTAs on Saturday 3 September for her role as Muriel Foster in Arendsvlei.

She made her first appearance in the series in 2019 and bowed out on 26 August 2021. 

PENGUIN FILMS REMEMBERS ICONIC ACTRESS 

Celebrating Shaleen Surtie-Richards’ posthumous SAFTA win, local production company Penguin Films penned a heartwarming message to the late actress.

“Congratulations to the late Shaleen Surtie-Richards for receiving the SAFTA for Best Supporting Actress in Arendsvlei. It was an honour working with such an icon,” wrote Penguin Films.

“May her soul rest in eternal peace.”

SHALEEN SURTIE-RICHARDS’ FINAL ON-SCREEN APPEARANCE 

The actress made her final on-screen appearance in Who’s My Daddy, a local comedy film that premiered in cinemas on Friday 2 September. The film stars the likes of Nadia Jaftha, Alfred Ntombela, Jason Goliath, Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse and Khanyi Mbau. 

The film is directed by David Kau and Sans Moonsamy.
