Six Guinness World Records held by South Africans

When it comes to the Guinness World Records, South Africa has achieved pretty significant feats over the years.

Whether it’s setting the record for the world’s longest bunny chow or the most pancakes served, the Rainbow Nation has plenty of records to brag about.

Let’s take a look at some of these homegrown accomplishments:

LOCAL GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS ARE LEKKER

Here are six Guinness World Records held by South Africans, for your consideration:

1. LARGEST AMAPIANO DANCE

On 22 August 2022, the largest amapiano dance – consisting of 252 participants – took place in Soweto. Quintus Jansen is credited with organising the group, while Bontle Modiselle was responsible for choreographing and teaching the five-minute amapiano dance.

2. MOST CAR DOORS SLAMMED

Strange, but true! As part of Suzuki Auto South Africa’s “Jimny Gathering” event, a total of 1 838 car doors were closed simultaneously in Herold, George Municipality, on 27 September 2025.

3. MOST COLOURS IN A NATIONAL FLAG

This one might cause some debates in the comments, but Guinness officially recognises the South African flag as the one with the most colours.

Adopted on 27 April 1994, Mzansi’s flag consists of six colours. That’s more colours than those of any other country that forms part of the United Nations. There’s some chatter about flags that contain coats of arms, like the flag of Belize, doing the most in the colour department – but hey, we’re more than happy to hold onto this record for now!

4. LARGEST LUNCHBOX

“The largest lunch box measures 8.47 m³… and was achieved by Altus Viljoen and Wilgenhof Men’s Residence (both South Africa) as measured in Stellenbosch, South Africa, on 12 April 2015,” per Guinness’ website.

“The lunch box was filled with produce, which was then donated to local charitable causes.”

5. MOST RUGBY UNION WORLD CUP WINS

The Springboks are waving the South African flag high – six colours and all! – on both the international rugby field and the Guinness World Records stage.

To date, the men’s national rugby union team has won a record four times at the Rugby World Cup: in 1995, 2007, 2019 and 2023.

6. LARGEST VUVUZELA

Talk about PARP-PARP! to the nth degree! The world’s largest vuvuzela measures 35 metres in length and 5.5 metres in diameter at the front.

“It was created by Hyundai Automotive South Africa and was presented and measured in Cape Town, South Africa, on 26 May 2010,” the website reads.

Well, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup just around the corner, perhaps it’s time to break out this vuvuzela again? That way, the folks in the USA and Mexico can hear us supporting Bafana Bafana loudly and proudly!
