Soli Philander’s humanitarian wish for Good Hope Centre

Before his tragic passing, the late Soli Philander shared his views on what should become of the Good Hope Centre, which was put up for auction last month.

The TV and theatre personality died this week after a battle with cancer.

Reports suggest that the iconic Cape Town landmark has been sold to Nigerian pastor John Anosike. However, city officials have yet to confirm the news.

SOLI PHILANDER’S SUGGESTION FOR GOOD HOPE CENTRE

In a TikTok video posted in December, Soli Philander spoke about reports that the Good Hope Centre would be auctioned.

The landmark was one of over 50 city-owned properties that went under the hammer.

Soli said, “I would buy it if I had the money. I think it’s a solution to homelessness locked up in that building.”

According to an obituary, Soli had a heart for the homeless people of Cape Town.

In 2023, he established the Soli Philander Foundation that feeds the homeless in District Six, Woodstock, Salt River, and the City Bowl. The foundation also supported LGBTQ+ youth through cultural and humanitarian programmes.

WHAT WILL BECOME OF LANDMARK SITE?

According to Nigerian pastor John Anosike of the Spirit Revelation Ecclesia church, a R135 million bid was placed for the Good Hope Centre.

The pastor has bragged about ownership of the property and has even responded to critics who questioned his motives.

He has yet to publicly reveal his plans for the landmark site.

Despite Anosike’s claims, the City of Cape Town has yet to accept any of the bids submitted at last month’s auction. It did reveal that it was in the auditing process of assessing the qualification status of bidders from various perspectives, including tax, ownership, risk, and financial compliance.
