‘Unlawful’: SA’s Louw Breytenbach resigns as Mr Gay World
‘Sadly, I was wrong’: SA’s Louw Breytenbach reveals he has officially resigned as Mr Gay World after a contractual dispute...
It’s been barely three months since Louw Breytenbach of South Africa was crowned Mr Gay World.
But it was not meant to be after the Boksburg resident resigned from his title after a contractual dispute.
In a statement from his representative, the 31-year-old human rights activist and theatre founder claimed he had walked away from his duties after a “back and forth legal battle”.
LOUW BREYTENBACH: MY IMAGE WAS BEING ABUSED
According to the statement, Louw claims the dispute led to the “deterioration” of his relationship with Mr Gay World bosses.
This was over stipulations that the pageant become his exclusive agent for any bookings or acting roles.
Louw also claimed that he was issued an amended contract which did not mention his remuneration. In addition, he claims that the contract imposed a 5,000 euros penalty should he step away from his duties.
The statement read: “This penalty is unlawful. What if they are in breach of contract, should I still pay the penalty? This does not make sense”.

To make matters worse, Louw claims that organisers allegedly refused to divulge how funds are used for the Mr Gay World Foundation.
“I think it is my right to know what happens to money that I raise for the organisation in my capacity as Mr Gay World. I led the gay pride march in Namibia last weekend and was not given anything towards my expenses.
Louw adds that the organisation essentially took advantage of him.
“I think my image was being abused because I was already a media personality before I entered. I’m disappointed as I really thought the Mr Gay World competition was a platform I could use to broaden my charity work. I also thought they had the interests of the LGBTIQ+ community at heart. Sadly, I was wrong.”Louw Breytenbach
