Mxolisi Kaunda, the mayor of eThekwini, was filmed performing his amapiano song, Mtomusha, at a hotel recently. The song was released earlier this year and is reportedly produced by the mayor’s son.

KAUNDA PERFORMS AMAPIANO TRACK

The video clip of Kaunda’s performance was filmed by Sunday Tribune journalist, Sboniso Mngadi, and posted to social media on Thursday, 15 September. The performance received a hostile reaction online.

Mngadi said the eThekwni mayor broke out the performance for international delegates at the Coastlands Hotel. The stage, in the video, is flanked with posters of Kaunda wearing his mayoral chain.

According to the Daily Sun, Kaunda debuted Mtomusha, which means youth, at the SABC’s 85-year anniversary celebration in Durban and encouraged the public broadcaster to play the track on all stations.

The 50-year-old said the song was a message to the youth that encouraged them to think before acting. It reportedly took just three hours to make.

“The song was produced by my son, who recently completed his studies in sound engineering. We were sitting at home when he created the beats and called me to add vocals to convey my message,” said Kaunda.

According to The Purpose Magazine, amapiano hitmaker Sir Trill was pleased with the mayor’s attempt and said the concept of reaching the youth through music was “brilliant.”

“The message in the song is very clear and to the point. It is great to see our leaders still having the zeal to engage with the youth. We as the youth, need more leaders like the major. Well done,” he said.
