Residents living along the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) coast have been warned to brace for heavy downpours and severe weather conditions expected on Thursday, 18 December.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued Level 2 and Level 5 weather warnings for parts of the province for Wednesday and Thursday, with coastal areas expected to be among the most affected.
Weather alerts in place for KZN coastal region
According to EWN, KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said the province was expecting severe thunderstorms that could result in widespread disruption.
“The province is expecting severe thunderstorms that could lead to flooding of roads, settlements and low-lying bridges and areas, excessive lightning, strong damaging winds and large amounts of small and large hail in populated areas,” Mzila said.
He said the Level 2 warning applies to KZN coastal areas stretching from Port Shepstone to Richards Bay.
“Disaster management teams will continue to monitor weather conditions and will be focusing on areas that are affected by weather incidents,” he said.
Authorities have urged KZN coast residents in affected areas to remain alert, avoid flooded roads and bridges, and follow official weather updates as conditions develop.
