Weather warning reaches Orange Level 6 for Mpumalanga, Limpopo

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an Orange Level 6 warning for severe thunderstorms in the Lowveld and escarpment areas of Mpumalanga and Limpopo, with conditions expected to persist from Sunday into Monday.

According to SAWS, the storms may result in heavy downpours, flooding, strong winds and possible damage to infrastructure.

A Level 6 warning indicates a high likelihood of significant impacts, urging residents and authorities to take urgent precautionary measures.

In addition, SAWS has issued a Level 5 warning for the extreme north-eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, while a Level 4 warning remains in place for the north-eastern regions of the province.

KwaZulu-Natal on High Alert

Disaster management teams in KwaZulu-Natal have been placed on high alert following forecasts of heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds, particularly in northern areas of the province.

Communities expected to be most affected include Jozini, Mtubatuba, Nongoma and oPhongolo, where rainfall could exceed 100 millimetres in some areas, increasing the risk of flash floods and river overflow.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Rev Thulasizwe Buthelezi has established a Joint Operations Centre (JOC) to coordinate the provincial response and closely monitor developments.

The JOC brings together emergency services, disaster management teams and key state agencies, including Eskom and the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral), to respond swiftly to any weather-related incidents.

Buthelezi said teams would pay special attention to flood-prone areas and critical infrastructure, including roads, bridges and electricity networks, to minimise potential damage and ensure public safety.

Public Urged to Remain Vigilant

Residents in all affected areas have been urged to remain vigilant, avoid travelling through flooded roads, and take necessary precautions to protect lives and property.

SAWS has advised the public to continue monitoring official weather updates as conditions may change rapidly.
