Islamabad may boycott International Cricket Council (ICC) events in Pakistan if India continues to combine politics with sports and refuses to tour for Champions Trophy 2025. Global cricket may suffer financially and structurally from this change.
Pakistan participated in many ICC events in India for over a decade and helped the ICC and BCCI avoid broadcaster contractual concerns.
After India skipped the 2023 Asia Cup in Pakistan, which led to a hybrid format, and now refuses to allow the team to travel to Pakistan for the ICC champions trophy, the government is considering banning Pakistani teams from competing against the neighbors “unless sports and politics are separated.”
Pakistan has suggested a full boycott of India matches, which might disrupt many ICC championships in India between 2024 and 2031.
Pakistan’s absence may reduce viewership and ICC’s broadcaster and sponsor revenue.
The ICC relies on big events including Pakistan and India, which draw record viewership and participation. It acquired $3.2 billion in broadcast rights for the 2024-2027 cycle and expects $1 billion more in other revenue.
A source stated that ICC tournaments are crucial to global cricket and that no India vs. Pakistan games will result in the cancellation of all broadcast and sponsorship deals.
In recent years, the ICC has ensured that India plays Pakistan at least once in global cricketing competitions, assuring a large cash stream.
