Why South Africa T20 squad gets IPL window by playing India?

Captain Aiden Markram said a four-match Twenty20 series against India gives South African players a chance to showcase their skills before the Indian Premier League auction later this month.

South African cricketers have been peppered throughout IPL teams for years, but those who haven’t been signed can improve their chances of being employed next year if they perform in their week-long series, starting in Durban on Friday.

“As we all know, a lot of things can fall into place for players and we’re fortunate that we play in a series against (India) pretty much just before the auction,” Markram told a Thursday press conference.

“That would be the benefit of doing well collectively and for those who raised their hands.

I don’t think it’s your incentive to do well for your nation, but the bonus that could follow.” The IPL and other T20 contests have made cricketers rich.

“I don’t think the camp has had many discussions like that. But again, if guys put their hands up, do well, and it leads to more, I’ll be thrilled for them,” Markram said.

Heinrich Klaasen at Sunrisers Hyderabad and Tristan Stubbs at Delhi Capitals are South Africans retained for next year’s IPL, which runs from late March to late May. 91 South Africans have registered for the IPL 2025 super auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Nov. 24 and 25. Each franchise can field 25 players, hence 204 slots will be auctioned.
