Will Young will play in the third Test against England at Hamilton’s Seddon Oval, but Mitch Santner’s recall will depend on Saturday’s toss. With crushing wins in Christchurch and Wellington, England has wrapped up the series, raising questions about the Black Caps’ lineup and strategy.
Left-armer Santner has not played since taking 13 wickets in Pune in late October to help New Zealand whitewash India 3-0. His inclusion depends on the wicket.
“We’ll check that wicket again tomorrow. “Obviously, conditions can vary here,” skipper Tom Latham told Hamilton reporters Friday.
“Will Young will join the team and talk to me. Youngy has done well recently and deserves this chance.”
As Devon Conway stays home to have his first child, Young, who was crowned Player of the Series as a stand-in for Kane Williamson in India, gets his moment.
Latham said Tim Southee will not be replaced by Santner if one of the four seamers who played the first two Tests is substituted. In the 107th and last Test at his home stadium, the 36-year-old right-arm swing bowler, who handed over the captaincy to Latham in early October, will end his 16-year career.
A tremendous event for Tim, last Test match… Tim’s excited. We’re excited “Latham said. We’ll remember him as a fantastic player. The numbers support that, but his leadership and bowling legacy will make him one of the greats.”
New Zealand cricket fans have turned out in large numbers for a disappointing series, and Latham said the squad hoped to give them something to cheer in Hamilton. Latham remarked, “Obviously, we really appreciate the support.”
“We know we haven’t played to our potential over the last couple of games, but hopefully we can put on a good showing for the fans.”
