The South African Police Service (SAPS) made another sizeable drug seizure over the weekend. A 23-year-old woman allegedly attempted to smuggle cocaine into the country from Brazil.

WOMAN ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED DRUG SMUGGLING

The suspect was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday, 15 October, after members of the Monitoring and Interception Section of Gauteng Crime Intelligence gathered information about a foreign woman who boarded a flight from Brazil to South Africa via Doha, Qatar.

The suspect’s belongings were searched and police found 3.6 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated street value of R1.4 million.

“The suspect will appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s soon on drug trafficking charges,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

Earlier in the same week, on 12 October, a 69-year-old suspect was arrested at OR Tambo for attempting to smuggle eight kilograms of pure heroin to India. The drugs had an estimated value of R1.2 million.

In Cape Town on 4 October, a 37-year-old man was caught trying to smuggle in cocaine worth R2.4 million. Police alleged he entered South Africa on a flight from Dubai, UAE.
