City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, said the service was alerted to the fire on the ground floor of a building at the corner of Victoria and Plein Street, Woodstock at approximately 20:00 on Thursday.

“When crews from Brooklyn Station and Roeland Street responded, they found several [liquefied petroleum gas] LPG gas cylinders on the premises, which could have been the cause of these explosions,” said Carelse.

The blaze was extinguished by 22:00 and the building was declared unsafe. The injured men were treated at the scene before being rushed to hospital.

As previously reported, the City’s MayCo Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said the two Woodstock explosion victims suffered “code red” injuries and were taken to Groote Schuur Hospital for treatment. He added that the initial explosion was followed by several secondary blasts.

“The two adult male patients, condition code red, sustained 70% to 100% burn wounds and were taken to Grootte Schuur Hospital,” he said.

The official cause of the explosions is yet to be declared.
