Woolworths’s Pride campaign returns – branded ‘evil’ by consumers
Woolworths has revived it's Pride campaign during the month of June - and turned off comments - amid backlash from consumers.
After much backlash from consumers, Woolworths has revived its Pride campaign for the month of June.
The retailer introduced its LGBTQ line of merchandise in stores last year. However, the campaign was largely condemned by the public, particularly the Muslim and Christian communities, who threatened to boycott the business.
WOOLWORTHS BRINGS BACK PRIDE CAMPAIGN – TURNS OFF COMMENTS
Last week, Woolworths revealed the rollout of its Pride campaign, which is commemorated during the month of June.
In various social media posts—which had their comments turned off—it shared: “It’s Pride Month, and it’s time to own, express, and celebrate your identity.
“Our Pride campaign is part of the Woolworths Inclusive Justice Initiative – acting against discrimination and marginalisation.”
The retailer has seemingly ignored comments from consumers.
@JelliiCrypto_: “·I’d like you to unblock your Pride initiative post for public comment. I’m wondering why you are choosing not to have public comments when every other post can be commented on“.
@JeremiahSoob: “Woolworths promoting Pride once again. Just when I thought I could start buying from them again. Pride is an evil movement with evil intentions”.
@RoryDun76684897: “Comments off cowards. Down with @WOOLWORTHS_SA for shoving this cr*p down our throats again”.
‘REJECTING CHRISTIAN SHOPPERS’
Meanwhile, Christian activists Family Policy Institute are calling on the public to “reject” Woolworths’ 2024 Pride campaign.
Founder Errol Naidoo – who hosts the TBN TV show Watchmen on the Wall – of having a “pro-LGBTQ anti-family bias”.
In a Facebook video, he said, “Woolworths has rejected the valid and reasonable concerns of Christian shoppers and launched its divisive in-store Pride 2024 campaign across the country.
He continued: “I am not aware of any Woolworths initiative that celebrates and promotes the value of the natural family as the foundation of society. The family unit is the strength of nations and the surest indicator of stability and prosperity.
Last year, the Muslim Judicial Council of South Africa claimed that it had met with senior management of Woolworths over their “concerns” of the Pride campaign.
It’s unclear what consensus was reached.
WOOLWORTHS: ‘IT’S NOT UP FOR DEBATE’
While many have bashed the retailer over their stance, others have applauded them for being inclusive and accepting of their LGBTQ shoppers.

Here are five things to know about Woolworths’ Pride campaign.
- In their Pride campaign, using the tagline “Be an ally,” Woolworths introduced a limited range of merchandise showcasing the LGBTQ flag.
- The range includes T-shirts, sweatshirts, socks, hats, and bags. According to the retailer, a portion of the sales will go towards LGBTQ charities.
- Apart from criticism of their Pride campaign, Woolworths was also accused by consumers of deleting comments in 2023. This year, the retailer has completely done away with comments.
- Woolworths defended their actions, citing: “Every person has the right to dignity regardless of their identity – this is a fact enshrined in our constitution. It is not up for debate”.
- Despite the criticism, Woolies has received the thumbs-up from members and allies of the LGBTQ community and various charities, including the GOOD Party.
