World Happiness Report: Where does South Africa rank in 2026?

The 2026 World Happiness Report has just been released. Unfortunately, South Africa’s placement on the report is far from jolly.

Every year, the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre – in collaboration with global analytics platform Gallup and the United Nations – puts together a report in which they measure happiness by country.

The report draws on responses by approximately 1 000 citizens across 140 nations. It uses four well-being indicators: life evaluations, positive emotions, negative emotions and the stable measure of quality of life.

WORLD HAPPINESS: TOP TEN

Before we reveal South Africa’s ranking, let’s take a squizz at the top ten happiest countries in the world (from first to tenth):

  • Finland
  • Iceland
  • Denmark
  • Costa Rica
  • Sweden
  • Norway
  • Netherlands
  • Israel
  • Luxembourg
  • Switzerland

Finland leads the Nordic-centric top three for the ninth year running. It’s a country where equality, freedom, quality education, human capital and children’s well-being are well promoted and incredibly valued. It’s also famous for its gorgeous natural landscapes and bounty of lakes.

Interestingly, fourth-place Costa Rica is the highest ranking ever for a Latin American country. It beat out Mexico (12th), Belize (27th), Uruguay (31st) and Brazil (32nd).

HO-HUM RANKING FOR SOUTH AFRICA

Unfortunately, South Africa has drifted into shaky waters with its middling ranking on the report.

The Rainbow Nation currently occupies 101st place out of 147 countries. It sits sandwiched between Cameroon (100th) and Azerbaijan (102nd).

In terms of overall life evaluation, it scored 5 009 points. Compared to Finland’s score of 7 764, the difference is a bit staggering.

It’s not all doom and gloom, though: SA’s cities have been performing splendidly on other annual lists and reports. Most recently, Cape Town landed in the top ten of the 2026 “World’s Best Cities” list.

Johannesburg also earned a respectable placement in a study ranking the world’s best cities for families.
