12 undocumented foreign nationals arrested, expired food seized
A multi-disciplinary team raided Pretoria, arresting 12 undocumented foreign nationals, fining 2 businessmen, and seizing expired food.

A multi-disciplinary team arrested twelve undocumented foreign nationals and fined two Pretoria businessmen for employing them during a raid in Pretoria West.
The operation targeted warehouses allegedly involved in the storage and sale of expired and illicit goods.
A multi-disciplinary team made up of the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Department of Home Affairs (DOH), labour inspectors, municipal health officials, Tshwane Emergency Management Services, and Crime Prevention Wardens conducted the raid.
The team shut down four warehouses and confiscated large quantities of expired food products and counterfeit items.
Police Urge Public to Report Illicit Trade
SAPS spokesperson, Lt Col Amanda van Wyk, confirmed that these raids form part of ongoing operations happening daily across the country.
“SAPS encourages all community members to join the fight against foodborne illness and illicit trade by reporting suspected violations to the relevant authorities,” she said.
Government Forms Priority Committee in Response to Foodborne Illness
In response to rising concerns over contaminated food. The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has established a Priority Committee on Foodborne Illness and Illicit Trade.
This follows multiple deaths linked to unsafe food, particularly in informal retail settings.
Spaza Shop Safety Under Scrutiny
The Citizen reported that, in February, Trade Minister Parks Tau warned Parliament about the health risks associated with food poisoning from spaza shops.
He cited poor hygiene practices, inadequate storage, and a general lack of awareness as major contributors to the problem.
Public Urged to Report Counterfeit Food Sales
Cabinet previously appealed to South Africans to report the sale of counterfeit or expired food in their communities.
