‘As the ANC, we’re not chanting Kill the Boer’ – Mbalula

ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula says the party will not chant ‘Kill the Boer’ as they feel it’s irrelevant in 2025.

This comes after the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema faced international backlash for singing the struggle song. On Thursday, the Constitutional Court dismissed AfriForum‘s attempt to appeal the Supreme Court of Appeal’s ruling, which stated that the chant “Kill the Boer” is not considered hate speech. 

The ANC leader acknowledged the ConCourt judgment on the chant and said parties who wish to chant it must be allowed to do so peacefully.

“As the ANC, we’re not chanting Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer – because we don’t believe that it’s relevant,” Mbalula said.

“We wouldn’t chant that slogan neither will we actually water it down because when we chant that slogan it has a particular meaning about guerillas across the Limpopo coming back home.”

“The background to it then meant as a chant in the camps as we prepared to infiltrate the country, the slogan came up, ‘Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer’ because these farmers were acting as commandos of the SANDF which belonged to apartheid,” Mbalula added.

Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel said the “Kill the Boer” song infringes on Afrikaners’ dignity. He also accused judges of using personal ideologies to interpret the Constitution
