Bafana Bafana crash out of qualifying for CHAN

Another defeat to Angola on Sunday means Bafana Bafana will disappointingly not be at next year’s CHAN finals in Algeria.

Bafana have crashed out in the second CHAN qualifying round, suffering a humbling 4-1 defeat to Angola at the Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday afternoon, losing 6-1 on aggregate.

Bafana renewed hope of qualification after an early goal, but from there they lost their way and ultimately slipped to a one-sided defeat.

Prior to this match, Bafana Bafana assistant coach Helman Mkhalele had said he remained hopeful that the side could still overturn their first leg African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualification loss.

South Africa suffered a 2-0 away defeat to Angola in the first leg of the second round of CHAN qualifiers last weekend, and again weren’t able to compete for the full 80 minutes on Sunday.

Broos‘ contract stipulates that he’ll skip competitions like COSAFA Cup and CHAN, and so Mkhalele has been in charge of the team.

“I’m very proud of how my boys pushed themselves in this match, given the fact that most of them haven’t been getting enough gametime in their respective clubs,” Mkhalele told SAFA website after the first leg.

“You could see that some of them, their legs were beginning to give in the later part of the game, as we continued pressing forward in search of goals.

“There are a whole lot of positives which I picked up from how we played, which gives me the hope that we can turn things around in the second leg.

“If Angola could score two goals in their own backyard, then I believe that we can score more goals in the return leg to win this round.

“We want to qualify for the 2023 CHAN tournament to be staged in Algeria.”
